Assembly Bill 2254 (formerly AB 390)

AB 2254 is on hold pending the outcome of Proposition 19.

What AB 2254 does

Legalize marijuana for all adults

License and regulate commercial sales and production of marijuana like alcohol

Generate an estimated $1.38 billion in tax revenue

Save taxpayers the costs of enforcing failed marijuana laws

What AB 2254 does not do

Legalize marijuana for those under 21

Allow driving under the influence of marijuana

Prohibit employers from drug testing

Impose new taxes on medical marijuana patients

Current status of AB 2254

On January 12, 2010, the California Assembly's Public Safety Committee approved AB 390 by a 4-3 vote. This is the first time in history that a legislative committee has voted to repeal marijuana prohibition. Due to a scheduling technicality, AB 390 died. Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, sponsor of AB 390, reintroduced an identical bill, AB 2254, which is currently active in the California State Assembly.
